A Transformative Journey at COCCI's "Equity in GI 2023" Event

As I stepped into the vibrant city of Atlanta, Georgia, for the Color of Crohn’s and Chronic Illness (COCCI) "Equity in GI 2023" event, I had no idea just how life-changing this experience would be. The Opening Reception set the tone, instantly connecting with our culture under the catchy theme: "GASTRO RULES EVERYTHING AROUND ME."

The importance of Equity in GI aligns with  COCCI's mission -  Breaking down healthcare barriers in the BIPOC community was definitely front and center. This event wasn't just about education on digestive diseases; it was about creating a sense of community, providing patient resources, and offering opportunities for networking with both fellow patients and healthcare professionals.

The event was packed with over 20 sessions, each shedding light on various aspects of equity in gastrointestinal health. Topics ranged from "Equity in Digestive Health" to "Mentality of Mental" and "Disparities in Gastrointestinal Illness." The diverse range of discussions left no stone unturned in addressing the critical issues surrounding healthcare equity.

One unexpected highlight was the Wellness Lounge. Here, attendees focused on the mind-body connection through sessions like yoga and meditation. It's a reminder that when living with a chronic disease, we mustn't neglect our mental well-being. I never imagined I'd practice yoga at a GI conference, but it turned out to be one of my favorite parts!

Patient panels were another incredible feature of the event. Hearing others' journeys and sharing my own during "The Block is Hot" session was empowering. COCCI provides a platform for patients to share their experiences, and it left me feeling truly empowered and connected.

"The Cookout" at Piedmont Park felt like a family reunion. It offered a unique opportunity to relax, enjoy music, dance, and connect with both medical professionals and industry representatives. It was a refreshing reminder that our fight against chronic illness is not a solitary one.
